2019 Mazda CX-9 vs Toyota Highlander
There’s a lot to consider when you’re shopping for a 3-row SUV in Willow Grove, Willow Manor, and Glenside. Sussman Mazda is simplifying the research process by offering a breakdown of two popular models: the 2019 Mazda CX-9 vs. Toyota Highlander.
Read on to see how these two SUVs compare as far as performance, interior features, and safety ratings.
The 2019 Highlander comes standard with a 2.7L engine. This motor provides 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty of power to get the SUV moving.
More fun comes standard in the Mazda CX-9. Its SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L engine offers 250 horsepower and an impressive 310 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the Highlander, the Mazda CX-9 base model is turbocharged, offering more pep when you hit the gas.
With great power comes great towing capacity. Standard Highlander models can only tow 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. Since the Mazda CX-9 comes with more power under the hood, it can also tow more. In fact, its engine offers a 3,500-pound towing capacity when properly equipped.
Both SUVs offer plenty of room for your family, but the Mazda CX-9 gives young ones more room to grow. It provides 39.4 inches of legroom in the second row, with 29.7 inches in the rear. The Toyota Highlander only offers 38.4 inches of legroom in the second row, with 27.7 inches in the rear.
A good SUV should also offer ample cargo space, even when all seats are in use. The Highlander does an okay job, with 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seats. The Mazda CX-9 beats that with 14.4 cubic feet of rear cargo volume.
What about other features that make the ride more comfortable? You’ll find many of the same high-tech features in both vehicles. However, the Mazda CX-9 comes standard with several features that are only available as upgrades in the Toyota Highlander. These include:
- Three-zone automatic climate control
- Push-button start
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
Exterior and Safety Features
Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9 both offer more peace of mind when you’re carrying precious cargo. They both received the title of 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
When you take a closer look at how they scored on crash tests, though, the Mazda CX-9 fares slightly better. It offered better protection in the event of a small overlap: front passenger-side collision, according to the IIHS.
The Toyota Highlander lights up the road with outdated projector-beam halogen headlights, while the Mazda CX-9 comes equipped with LED headlights. LED bulbs last far longer before needing replacements, giving you less maintenance to worry about. They also use less power to provide the same amount of illumination, making them an eco-friendly choice.
